Sabbatical at Volvo/Gothenburg: Think Tank "Strong Artificial Intelligence“

New ideas, innovative research approaches and international collaborations – in the coming summer semester 2017 the Institute Director Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Sabina Jeschke will take a break from her academic duties at the RWTH Aachen University and the Cybernetics Lab IMA / ZLW & IfU and enter a sabbatical to devote herself to the further development of her research in the field of artificial and machine consciousness. She follows the invitation of the Volvo Car Corporation to an extended stay in the main company site at Gothenburg/Torslanda – only 25 km from her birthplace Kungälv. Sabina Jeschke and Volvo have already met several times in the context of relevant specialist lectures in the field of their shared research interests artificial intelligence, Cyber-Physical Systems and the Internet of Things. Volvo Car Corporation is currently strengthening its activities in the area of “strong artificial intelligence”, concepts that address the assessments, awareness and ethics of technological systems beyond the simple implementation of complex tasks. A corresponding think tank, reinforced by external expertise, is currently under construction. In this context, the great convergence of research interests as well as methods with the Cybernetics Lab became clear. Sabbaticals are a central element of scientific careers and provide room for the opening of new thinking spaces. At the same time, they are not easily reconciled with the management of major scientific institutes and require the planning and the establishment of a strong management structure. Prof. Dr. Ingrid Isenhardt and Dr. Frank Hees, who are excellently appointed and experienced in the field, will be responsible for almost all office activities in the absence of Prof. Sabina Jeschke. This provides the Cybernetics Lab with the organizational structure to create such freedom to reintroduce fundamentally new ideas into research questions from basic to applications with its interdisciplinary teams. In this spirit, we wish our Institute Director that the long days of the Swedish summer will leave her plenty of time for new inspiration.
